CENTRAL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES' GROUP INSURANCE SCHEME, 1980
The CGEGIS'80 scheme is a Central Government of India employees Welfare scheme which came into effect from January 1982. It replaced the previous "Central Government Employees' Insurance Scheme 1977'. It was notified on 1st November 1980.
This scheme is mandatory for every regular employee under Central Government of India who are recruited through proper recruitment rules.
Employees will be enrolled as members of the Scheme only from the 1st January every year. Suppose , if an employee enters service on or after 2nd January in any year, he will be enrolled as a member of the Scheme only from 1st January of the following year. He will be entitled to an insurance cover appropriate to the Group to which he belongs, by paying a reduced rate of monthly subscription as premium for the insurance. The purpose is that, the insurance cover should be made available immediately a person joins service, even though the full benefit of the Scheme will be available from the 1St January of the next year only.
The period before he was enrolled to the scheme on the 1st January of the next year, during that period contribution will be recovered at 1/3( one-third) rate of the applicable rate to which he will be in the group.
An employee who are a member of the Scheme has to submit a valid nomination for the beneficiary of the amount due to him in case of his death. The prescribed form is as hereunder.

Recovery Schedule as FORM No13 has to be pasted in the Service Book of the employee where every rate of recoveries/subscription made towards CGEGIS'80 Scheme should be recorded year-wise or as applicable which has to be attested by the DDO.

Signature of DDO
Record of every recoveries toward CGEGIS'80 must be kept intact as in FORM 13 in the Service Book of the employee. This will enable speeding up of the process of final payment at the time of retirement or superannuation.
